Bluesfest from Byron Bay will, for the first time ever, add DAY 6, the Anzac Day Holiday, to its Bluesfest 2011 musical adventure. Today's artist lineup announcement for the extra day follows worldwide and national press covering the attempts by a couple of Byron Shire Councilors to sabotage the event's submission to secure an extra day for locals and visitors, to see Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and other headliners, which would also bring further business to the local Byron economy.

Following pressure from local business and media coverage, six of seven councilors voted in favour of the Day 6 extension at a January 6 2011 'extraordinary meeting'.

That's what happened - Bluesfest fought the good fight and we won! Today we unveil the line-up of headliners for Day 6 - with much more to come!

Festival Director's comment from Peter Noble:

"We're over the moon about adding Day 6 for the first time ever, bringing more incredible music to our festival fans and more business to the Byron economy. We fought the good fight for locals and visitors who want to see Bob Dylan in particular that day, and I have to say that most Byron Bay Councilors came on side in a fast and exemplary manner to get this over the line - so a heartfelt thank you guys.

"At a time when most music festivals are doing it tough, we're very proud of the overwhelming demand we've been able to generate for Bluesfest - simply by working hard, ensuring amenities are green and of the highest order, and of course programming the best artists on the planet, who love coming here to such an appreciative audience.

"Byron Bay has been fortunate in not being affected by the recent weather and flood conditions to both the north and south of the area. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been hit with these very difficult conditions, and I'm sure the joy and communal spirit that always surrounds Bluesfest will go some way to assisting the healing process for our fellow Australians."

Artist Heaven on Tuesday April 26!

Day 6 at Bluesfest 2011 will feature several stages with a big lineup of AMAZING international and local artists. Watch this space for the final Day 6 schedule, but for now we can confirm the following stellar artists for your festival pleasure:

Bob Dylan; Elvis Costello; Gurrumul;
Buffy Sainte-Marie (NEW announcement); Paul Kelly (NEW);
Tim Finn (NEW); Tony Joe White; Eli Paperboy Reed (NEW);
and The Mad Bastards (NEW) - with more to come!

Bob Dylan - Bluesfest is proud to welcome back for an encore performance the Poet, Artist, Actor, Radio Announcer, Singer, Songwriter of the 20th century… absolute legend, Mr Bob Dylan - heading to Byron Bay for the very first time to play at Bluesfest.

Elvis Costello - also the long awaited Bluesfest debut of this international singer/songwriter superstar! Such diversity and credibility over the years with so many great songs will surely make for an unforgettably spectacular debut at Bluesfest.

Gurrumul - exclusive to Bluesfest, who has not been bewitched by the hauntingly beautiful voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu over the past couple of years? His debut self-titled 2008 album has received exceptional worldwide reviews. It entered the European World Music Chart at number 8 and has since topped the Word Music charts across the continent.

Buffy Sainte-Marie - the foremost Native American performer of our time - is gracing Australian shores in her FIRST AUSTRALIAN tour in almost 40 years, her sideshows coinciding with her much anticipated tour here for Bluesfest.

One of the genuine music greats that began in the 1960s and is still performing today, Buffy Sainte-Marie is a concert artist, extraordinary songwriter and composer, painter, digital artist, civil rights activist, pacifist, noted philanthropist, and educator on Native American culture.

Her deep artistry has led to numerous awards and honours which include her very first album winning Billboard's Best New Artist in 1964, entry to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an Academy Award for best song, a Golden Globe award, three Juno awards, four honorary University doctorates, being a medal recipient from Queen Elizabeth II - and a career including 18 albums and three TV specials!

Her haunting music, joyful spirit, and thought provoking songwriting has given the world a rich catalog of classic music including: "Up Where We Belong" (from An Officer and a Gentleman which won her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Film Award for "Best Original Song" - she co-wrote the song with her former husband, arranger/producer Jack Nitzsche. In 1997, Buffy also won a Gemini Award for her 1996 variety special carrying the same name as the hit song: Up Where We Belong.

Her other landmark songs include her searing, political era-defining anthem "Universal Soldier" that remains arguably the finest anti-war song ever. More of her most popular songs include "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and the much-loved classic "Until It's Time for You to Go", which in a true testament to her greatness has been recorded by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Roberta Flack, Françoise Hardy, Cher, and Bobby Darin. They are not alone either: fellow artists who have fallen in love with Buffy Sainte-Marie and covered her songs include: Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, The Indigo Girls, Chet Atkins, Taj Mahal, Gram Parsons, and Neko Case!

How's that for a true accolade to her musical gift?

Paul Kelly - one of the country's most enduring artists, songwriters and poets just picked up top honour, the Rolling Stone Award at recent Rolling Stone Awards 2011.This ARIA Hall of Famer is responsible for so many incredible songs: "How to Make Gravy", "From St Kilda to King's Cross", "To Her Door", "From Little Things Big Things Grow" (co-written with Kev Carmody), "Little Decisions", "Darling It Hurts", "I'll Be Your Lover" - and so many more.

Tim Finn - Tim Finn is responsible for some of Australasia's most treasured songs, including the Split Enz hits "Six Months in a Leaky Boat", "Poor Boy", "I See Red", and "I Hope I Never". With his brother Neil, Tim co-wrote the Crowded House hits "Weather With You", "It's Only Natural" and "Four Seasons in One Day". After lighting up Bluesfest 2009, Tim is back to impress us again in 2011. You can also expect his fantastic solo career hits "Fraction Too Much Friction", "Persuasion" and "Not Even Close", and the very best from his latest studio album The Conversation.

Tony Joe White - part of America's soundtrack - his music is sparse and elegant, filled with shadows, sadness and beauty. Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Etta James have in their own right honoured "the Swamp Fox" by cutting his tunes. You'll soon understand why.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed - it's quite a voyage that led to Eli "Paperboy" Reed being nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2009 MOJO Awards. In addition MOJO magazine named Eli Paperboy Reed's new album as one of the top 40 release of 2010.

This young soul belter has done time in a Mississippi Delta juke joint following high school in Boston, and with his red-hot band, he's now signed to Capitol Records. With the feel of classic R&B and gritty soul, he creates a sweaty party that pulls everyone onto the dance floor. Get ready to get down.

The Mad Bastards - Featuring Stephen Pigram, Alan Pigram and Alex Lloyd

Stephen and Alan Pigram are legends of the Australian music scene. Hailing from Broome, the music of their much loved band the Pigram Brothers is widely regarded as "the sound of the Kimberley".

Alex Lloyd is one of Australia's most popular rock artists, having sold more than half a million records and being a triple-ARIA Award winner.

The "Mad Bastards Trio" is a stunning collaboration between two of Australia's finest musical talents whom together have created the soundtrack to the MAD BASTARDS movie which has won rapturous response at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

About Bluesfest

Bluesfest has grown to be one of Australia's premier music festival events. Held annually for the last 21 years over the Easter long weekend, the 5 day musical extravaganza (6 days in 2011!) attracts people from around the world and across Australia to the North Coast of New South Wales, Byron Bay.

From humble beginnings in 1990 attracting a modest audience size of 6,000 music lovers from around the country, Bluesfest has steadily developed its reputation of excellence amongst musicians and concert goers nationally and internationally throughout its 21 year history.

In October 2010, Bluesfest was overjoyed to take away the top gong, being named as the Australian Event of the Year at the Australian Event Awards (ahead of non-music events like the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the Australian Open Tennis 2010) - as well as winning Australia's Best Cultural or Arts Event at the same awards.
