Just in case you can't get enough - today, we're adding another stack of artists to the bill, as well as well as announcing a 2nd show of a much anticipated performer, and a wonderful collaboration of two very gifted musicians.

"There are so many performances this year, that are going to move you deeply and the Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite collaboration will be one of many"

I can't wait to see Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite and their band on stage together on Day 1 of Bluesfest Thursday 28th of March. This is a show you simply cannot miss.

There are so many performances this year, that are going to move you deeply and this will be one of many. I was there the year Harper begged an introduction to his idol at Bluesfest 1996. Despite the difference in age and background, the two hit it off immediately. On Good Friday, Day 2 - Ben Harper will perform solo.

Manu Chao will be gracing us with a 2nd show on Easter Sunday. When we announced Manu Chao for Good Friday the response was massive, his following in Australia is so big, so it will be welcomed news to many Festival goers.

The ZAC BROWN BAND's addition to the Easter Monday will spice things up even more. They are one entertaining, impressive and downright outstanding band with an amazing energy.

Plus we are welcoming back some very treasured artists of the Music Maker Foundation. The foundation is something very close to my heart, as it also supports the older musicians as well as musicians in need. There are simply so many good things that come out of this Foundation. This year the Music Maker Blues Revue features artists Ironing Board Sam, Major Handy, Pat Wilder & Dr Burt. It's a Blues Blend at its best!

I saw Nicky Bomba's BUSTAMENTO at the recent Woodford Folk Festival and I tell you what: Nicky had the audience jumping up and down, and doing all sorts of movements - everyone just loved it. So, if you are up for some more dancing and shaking it, then be there for Nicky's show on Sunday early evening. You can't sit down for this one.

Of course we had to add more of our own Aussie Talent to the bill as well including last years' Busking competition winner Brotherfox. Way to go.

The Grammys: There are a total of 17 Grammy Winners performing at this years' Festival sharing a whopping 67 Grammy's between them so it's a new record. With the upcoming Grammy Awards on Feb 10, more could be added. Bluesfest 2103 Artists like Bonnie Raitt, The Lumineers, Zac Brown and Jimmy Cliff are all up for Grammy's, so the list may grow!

A special mention has to go to RODRIGUEZ's documentary 'Searching for Sugarman' which has been nominated for an OSCAR in the category of Best Documentary. What a massive honour & recognition and I wish him all the best for the upcoming Academy Awards.

The Pollstar Awards ceremony in LA is just around the corner. I am so thrilled that Bluesfest is nominated for 'Best International Music Festival' and we are up against the world's Best Festivals. It really is the music industry's major award ceremony.

And for some final news, 'The Rhythms Magazine' Readers Poll has also awarded Bluesfest "Best Australian Festival" for the 18th time. We now have a 15 year straight record; the only year we missed out was in 1997. Thank you everyone who voted for us.

Another ticket price increase is imminent as certain allocations are selling out. All tickets are selling fast and with the line up this year, we are heading towards a sell out!

If you have not already done so, then get your tickets now. At the moment a 5 day ticket only sets you back only $109 per day! It's such a great deal. For all ticket prices click here .

Tent Motels have now sold out, so has the space for the Large camping vehicles,
BUT we still have camping space left. Nothing like doing it yourself and bringing your own camping gear and good news is that you can still book your own Tepee as well.

We don't want YOU to miss out on this years' Bluesfest, it's our best line up ever, so make sure you don't leave it too late, like so many of us tend to do. It really is artist heaven this year!!!

ROBERT PLANT & PAUL SIMON SHOWS: There will be NO extra shows announced in Brisbane or north of Bluesfest. Robert Plant's performance at Bluesfest on Easter Saturday 30th of March and Paul Simon's performance on Easter Monday 1st of April will be the only shows north of Byron Bay.

BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE

In a very special treat for Ben Harper fans, not only will the Bluesfest favourite be coming to the Festival with his band, but he will also be teaming up with renowned harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite for a special performance this Easter.

Ben Harper... Multi Instrumentalist...Artist...Activist, the list goes on. Whether it's through the soul of Southern Gospel, 70's funk, blues, reggae or rock and roll, Ben and his trademark Weissenborn guitar wows audiences across the globe with his provoking live performances, poignant lyrics and timeless song writing.

Mississippi born Charlie Musselwhite is a Bluesfest veteran, in fact he played at the first ever Bluesfest. Musselwhite is one of the most revered blues musicians in the world, he doesn't just play the Blues, he lives the Blues, "Blues is a feeling" he says "...B.B. King could sing Mary Had a Little Lamb and it would be the blues". Musselwhite has collaborated with legendary musicians including Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Tom Waits to name a few. He has earned many accolades during his career, including induction into the Blues Hall of Fame.

The two prolific Artists have been busy collaborating to create Get Up! set for release early 2013. The album marks Ben's 12th studio album and was recorded in LA and produced by Ben. Get Up! Is a piercing song-cycle of struggle and heart and is a striking mix of blues, gospel, roots and R&B with Charlie's harmonica accentuating Harper's vocals throughout. Charlie says of the collaboration, "Ben and I really locked in, personally and musically, when we recorded with John Lee Hooker, ever since then we wanted to record together and being in the studio together is just a natural. You can hear it and feel it in the music on Get Up!"

Ben has been a fan of Musselwhite since childhood and begged an introduction to his idol at the 1996 Bluesfest. Despite the difference in age and background the pair hit it off immediately. The Get Up! project has been 10 years in the making says Ben "Charlie and I have been looking to make this record for over ten years and now that we've gotten to it," "I can't wait to play it live." We can't wait for them to play it live either, let the countdown to Bluesfest begin!

BEN HARPER & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE WILL PERFORM AT BLUESFEST ON THU 28th OF MARCH.

ZAC BROWN BAND

image

Two-time GRAMMY Award winners and multi-platinum artists Zac Brown Band (ZBB) have become one of music's most heralded acts. With a historic nine consecutive #1 hit singles, awe-inspiring musicianship and dynamic live shows, the Georgia six-piece is definitely built to last.

Peter Noble, Festival Director adds: "The Zac Brown Band are the biggest new country music band in the world playing to over 10,000 people nightly in the U.S.

They rock, have folk influences and are simply not to be missed!"

Since 2009, the band has garnered more than 50 combined GRAMMY, ACM, AMA, CMA, and CMT award nominations with wins including their 2010 GRAMMY win for "Best New Artist," 2010 CMA win for "New Artist of the Year," and 2011 ACM Top Vocal Event of the Year for "As She's Walking Away" with Alan Jackson.

In 2012, their latest album Uncaged debuted at # 1 on Billboard 200. Describing the new album is anything but simple. "It's your basic country-Southern rock-bluegrass-reggae-jam record," Brown joked to Associated Press. The group added Daniel de los Reyes, a percussionist who's worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Sting and Stevie Nicks among others. His addition to the already existing rhythm section of bassist John Driskell Hopkins and drummer Chris Fryar has allowed the band to expand its sound into new territory. Bluesfest 2013 Artists Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue also feature on the album; ZBB's first shot at straight -up R&B.

In many ways Zac Brown Band is an unlikely success story. Bands that cover so much territory tend to become critics' darlings, but not platinum sellers. "The two things I think that make this band different from anybody else, and the reason why we're here today, is that everybody has an insane work ethic," says ZBB Guitarist/Keyboardist Bowles. "Nobody complains. Everybody plays their asses off, everybody gets on the plane or bus even if they're not feeling well, and tries to do everything to the best of their ability, always. And Zac has this ability to make you believe what he's singing no matter what. So if we do an R&B tune or a reggae tune, he's totally believable".

"One cool thing about Zac is that he loves to include everybody," ZBB Fiddle/ Vocalist De Martini adds. "He doesn't really have to have the Zac Brown Band. I think he would be successful just as Zac Brown. But the band adds a lot and takes it to another level. It's one big family with him."

A big welcome to the Zac Brown 'Family' to Bluesfest this Easter.

'the ringmaster of a multicultural, cross-generational, genre-busting circus that can whip tens of thousands of people into a frenzy'' - PITCHFORK

'a rapid-fire blend of reggae, post-punk, Afropop and more, breaking the rules of genre left and right." - LOS ANGELES TIMES

Fans of Manu Chao will be happy to hear that the Global Music Phenomenon will be playing a second show on Easter Sunday with his band La Ventura.

Having made music since the late 80s as leader of rock outfit Mano Negra and then as a solo artist, Chao is one of the world's most well-known and respected musicians, with a huge cult following in all corners of the globe - from South, Central and North America to Europe, Japan, Africa and back - selling more than 10 million albums.

MUSIC MAKER BLUES REVUE FEAT. IRONING BOARD SAM, MAJOR HANDY, PAT WILDER & DR. BURT

image

Bluesfest is honoured to bring this integral blues institution back to Australia and proud to be taking these musicians on the road for the first time. Far too often true musical pioneers become forgotten heroes and the music they played such a part in creating is forgotten along with them. Music Maker Foundation are fighting the good fight to keep the blues and southern roots music alive and pay homage to these incredible musicians. This inspired and inspiring non-profit North American organisation is dedicated to give back to the roots of American music. After truly moving, humbling and beautiful performances over the years at Bluesfest, we knew 2013 would be the year to take this incredible foundation on the road. This year we'll be featuring The Music Maker Blues Revue featuring Boogie Woogie legend Ironing Board Sam, Guitar slinging siren Pat Wilder, Alabama bluesman Dr. Burt and Zydeco giant Major Handy, with Albert White, Nashid Abdul Khaaliq and Ardie Dean.

Ironing Board Sam, a singer, songwriter and piano player, was a house musician on the first televised African-American music revue called "Night Train" and then became one of the best-loved entertainers on the Crescent City's music scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FWyOor_oZQ

Dr. G. B. Burt plays his twelve-string guitar with his own special tuning, morphing his guitar into the raw sound similar to that of an organ or a piano accompanying his haunting vocals that mesmerises audiences the world over. "At 72 the door has opened for me." He claims and when we hear his music, he reciprocates opening and reopening the door to a totally traditional, totally original musical world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sRm_0aGnO8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FLgPnovjfE

Pat Wilder's musical foundation is rooted in jazz, rock, R&B, blues and gospel and is known as "one of the most exciting blues guitarists/vocalists to come out of the bay area in a long time." - Lee Hildebrand, The San Francisco Bay Guardian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrRf20vP-qE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PujE_zJzcWk

Major Handy's 40-year career in music, playing the accordion and the guitar, has seen him touring much of the world and fronting many of his own bands. With his career long and varied, Handy is not sure how many 45s were released under his name, but it was not until late 2009 that he released the album Zydeco Feeling and began to gain international attention. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q-hy1gPCGA

Albert White, from Atlanta, G.A., has toured Europe with the Music Maker Blues Revue and frequently plays festivals with former band-mate Beverly "Guitar" Watkins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMD91FtKxug

Nashid Abdul Khaaliq, is one of the great versatile bass players, graduating from Berkeley College of Music, playing bass with Muddy Water's son Big Bill Morganfield as well as releasing an incredible Jazz album.

Ardie Dean has drummed for Ernie K-Doe, Bo Diddley, Jerry McCain, Greg Allman, Taj Mahal, and Henry Grey since he began playing the blues in 1969.

LEONARDO'S BRIDE

image

There is going to be a lot of memories flowing in the Bluesfest crowd when Leonardo's Bride returns to the stage for two exclusive performances this Easter.

In late 2000 Leonardo's Bride performed a concert in Sydney's Domain to over 80,000 people. A few months later the group called it quits. There were no farewell shows or explanations and the band is now reuniting for the first time in 12 years at Bluesfest.

From their early DIY days of hand drawn gig posters, indie EPs and greyhound buses, Leonardo's Bride went on to become one of Australia's most loved bands with top 40 singles, platinum records and multi APRA awards and ARIA nominations. They toured internationally and domestically for over a decade.

They may have disappeared, but their music's popularity has continued to grow and gather new fans. Their biggest hit "Even When I'm Sleeping" was voted one of APRA's Top 30 Australian songs of all time.

Band members have been far from idle since then. As well as solo albums, singer Abby Dobson has enjoyed success with Paul Mac and more recently Baby Et Lulu. Guitarist/songwriter Dean Manning has released 3 albums with Holidays On Ice, his collaboration with Angie Hart (Frente). The creator of the band's record covers, Manning has also found acclaim as a painter and artist with solo exhibitions throughout Australia.

Leonardo's Bride come together for these two special shows at Bluesfest with the original line-up of Abby Dobson on vocals, Dean Manning on guitars, Jon 'Howler' Howell on drums and Pat Wong on bass.

NICKY BOMBA'S BUSTAMENTO

image

Nicky Bomba is going to be one busy man this Bluesfest! Not only will he be conducting the Melbourne Ska Orchestra, it will be the Bluesfest debut of his new band Bustamento, a tropical shaking six piece that pays homage to the upbeat rhythms of the Caribbean, covering the Calypso, Mento, Early Reggae and Ska styles.

The inspiration for the band came about back in 2003, when Nicky was attending his first musical expo in Essen, Germany ""I reached my destination and there before me was Stanley Beckford and his Mento group. The music had a happy familiarity. They were making words up on the spot and it immediately reminded me of my Maltese heritage where we would do the same thing. Island music eh?"

On Nicky's return to Australia he made a few phone calls and started writing songs that lent themselves perfectly to the genre. Nicky Bomba's Bustamento was then created from bands that have existed in many different forms for over 15 years.

In 2012 the fruit of their labour "Intrepid Adventures to the Lost Riddim Islands" was ready to be released. The Aria nominated album was recorded using old school techniques by award winning engineer Robin Mai and produced by Nicky Bomba. They recorded 23 songs in one weekend and realised they had something special... Jungle drums, sweet harmonies, banjos, ukuleles, double bass, piano, trumpets, saxophones, steel drums, mbiras and jazz guitars .

ALLEN STONE

image

"..Allen Stone has the best effing voice I've ever heard" MTV

"..his voice and energy reminds listeners of music legends like Stevie Wonder and Prince" CNN

There is quite a stir surrounding America's latest soul sensation, Allen Stone. Perhaps it's because the 25 year old has drawn comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers (The New York Times). Or that the self proclaimed 'hippy with soul' or rather the 'hipster with soul' with his oversized cardigans, long blonde hair and thick rimmed glasses, has been selling out shows from Coast to Coast. One thing for sure is that Allen Stone can sing, and the raw, soulful power of his voice is winning him an adoring fan base world-wide, as USA Today puts it, he is the "pitch perfect powerhouse".

Stone is the son of a preacher man, and like many soul singers, he got his start in church. Surrounded by gospel music, Allen didn't discover soul music until he was a teenager and started collecting classic albums from the 60's and 70's. Allen says of the genre; "Soul music from that time wasn't just about bumpin' and grindin' at the club- it was a huge part of a cultural movement. That's where my inspiration comes from".

From the Church to the screen, Allen's first national TV appearance on "Conan" came after the music booker saw a youTube video of Allen performing in his mother's living room ( The Clip has now been viewed 1.8million times and growing) . Since then, he has appeared on Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Last Call with Carson Daly just to name a few.

Allen debut album was the self released Last To Speak (2010) he was then signed to ATO records who re-released his second, self titled album (2012). Allen Stone jumped into the Top 10 of Billboard's Heatseekers Chart and entered the Top 5 of iTunes R&B/ Soul Charts. The album, set for release in Australia in March 15th 2013 features some of the darker topics of Allen's era, "Contact High" is a striking commentary on the toll technology has taken on relationships and the sensuous sounding "Unaware" is a sly examination of the current economic crisis.

Allen Stone is definitely taking the shortcut to stardom, make sure you see him before you can't get your hands on a ticket.

ALLEN STONE WILL PERFORM AT BLUESFEST ON SUN 31st of MARCH & MON 1st of APRIL

KIM CHURCHILL

image

Bluesfest welcomes back Kim Churchill; who will be bringing his explosive, intricate finger picking percussive beats on the body of the guitar and two-handed tapping intertwined with earthly stomp box, powerful harmonica melodies and soulful voice to the stage this Easter.

Kim is a true blue Aussie who is just 21; a surfer with a connection to the sea that spills out in his performances, even when he's a long, long way from the beach. And he's a reminder to us all that choosing what's in your heart is better than choosing what's in your head.

We are sure you have caught his unique sound at past Bluesfest's as this young guitarist is hard to miss, impossible to walk past and an awe-worthy performer. Kim doesn't just show up and play his music. He takes the time to explain his songs, he takes the time to thank the crowd and he pauses to inhale the manifestation of his dream.

In an age full of self-centered performers who consider fanfare a right and not a privilege, Kim is a breath of fresh air, come along and be mesmerized by Kim Churchill this Bluesfest.

SHAUN KIRK

image

" The most interesting blues talent this country has seen in a long time" Matthew Fredrick, PBS FM

" Simply astounding. Definitely a must for any blues lover" Tsunami/Forte Magazine

We can't wait to have Shaun Kirk win over the crowd with his charming style of boogie blues & soul this Easter. Growing up an enthusiastic and successful sportsman, it wasn't until a badly broken ankle at the age of seventeen forced him to sit still for a while, that Shaun Kirk discovered his passion for music. Having written his first song in a hospital bed whilst waiting for surgery, Shaun decided to experiment with his new-found love at many of Melbourne's blues jam nights. Though at the time a folk singer, watching the more experienced artists jam their 12-bar tunes would later see Shaun realize an irrefutable feel for the blues.

Shaun independently released his debut album 'Cruisin' in 2010, the album won Shaun the 'best debut album' at the 2010 VIC/TAS Blues Music Awards. His latest album 'Thank You For Giving Me The Blues', sees the 24 year old take a leap in musical maturity, it features seven original tracks and three covers and his innovative arrangements of old blues standards by the likes of Willie Dixon and Bo Diddley show his inclination to take the genre to places it hasn't been. The emotive guitar playing and animated blues harmonica throughout as well as the thick drum /percussive grooves will inspire even the most docile listener to boogie. The album also features a cameo performance by Australian Blues Legend, Lloyd Spiegel who also happens to be one of Shaun's greatest influences.

It hasn't taken Shaun long to become quite the seasoned performer and he knows how to make the most of his 'one man show'; surrounded by a stomp box, tambourine, hi-hat, cymbal, kick and snare drum, Shaun's flair for playing six percussive sounds with his feet whilst delivering quality guitar and blues harmonica will have the Bluesfest crowd stomping and dancing in no time at all. Come along and see this Bluesman on the rise.

"Brother Fox play a fusion of folk, roots and reggae that will compel you to sway and dance along." WEEKEND NOTES

"Upbeat tunes, festival vibes and lively percussion. Sounds like the soundtrack to your summer." GOODGUIDE

It turns out, that was all they needed and they won the competition. Since then, Brother Fox have been enjoying success since the win of the much-coveted Busking Comp. The festival appearances have been cumulating heavy and fast including Grotto Fest where the band was described as;

"The Australian reggae version of Mumford & Sons...Throw in a bit of Bob Marley and a twist of Latin, then you have but a mere glimpse of what Brother Fox are! Pure energy and festival fun!" GrottoFest

The band describe themselves as "an experiment in lifestyle design. With a high-energy folk/root infusion, our sole purpose is to amplify your world- to reconnect you with this very moment, the right now, your present and our gift"

2012 has seen the band supporting Brisbane reggae/roots artists including The Lyrical, Darky Roots and One Dread at some of Brisbane's top music venues The Joynt, Solbar and many more. To add to the list of growing support shows, Brother Fox have just come off the back of supporting Jinja Safari on a leg of their Rural Youth indent tour in early December.

Brother Fox is setting its sights firmly on the future with the plan for the near future being an imminent EP release and a "play as many shows as possible" attitude.
