Perfecting Wisdom
|
As part of our weekly offerings of the six perfections presented in Shantideva's 'A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life' we present to you our sixth and final wallpaper in the series for your computer desktop or iPhone.
On the path of a Bodhisattva, one should practice what are called the six perfections of: Giving, Ethics, Patience, Perseverance, Concentration and Wisdom.
This week we present the perfection - Wisdom.
The first verse on the Wisdom Chapter opens as follows: |
 |
All these branches of the Doctrine
The Enlightened Sage expounded for the sake of wisdom.
Therefore they must cultivate this wisdom
Who wish to have an end of suffering.
The extent to which we are out of synch with reality ie the extent to which we lack wisdom is the extent to which we suffer and therefore cause harm to others.
His Holiness has said there are 3 main types of Wisdom
- Conventional Wisdom realising the 5 fields of knowledge or traditional science
- Ultimate Wisdom realising the mode of substance of phenomena
- Wisdom knowing how to help sentient beings
His Holiness has also said "The wisdom that is the realisation of emptiness, the true nature of things; this is absolute wisdom."
When Bodhisattva's meditate on emptiness, their aim is mainly to dispel the obstacles to knowledge. In order to do this, it is not enough simply to have an intellectual understanding of the subtle nature of things.
His Holiness also says; It is essential that any spiritual aspirant cultivates a perspective that directly opposes the erroneous belief that grasps onto the concrete existence of things and events.
The wisdom that dispels these obscurations must be supported by such practices as generosity and the other perfections.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Within Buddhism, the altruistic intention to become enlightened is the best of all altruistic attitudes. When this altruism is transformed into action you engage in practicing the six perfections: Giving, Ethics, Patience, Perseverance, Concentration and Wisdom.
This series on the 6 perfections offers us but a glimpse into these profound paramitas. Over the Long Weekend in June, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be offering us his insight and wisdom into these subjects and opening us to a new level of understanding. |
 |
This long weekend in June is a rare opportunity to learn from a teacher of profound wisdom and compassion. Why not join us?
