July 2009

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the July issue of our Newsletter - a special time of year for His Holiness.

On July 6th, His Holiness celebrated his 74th birthday in New Delhi at a function organised by the Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association

where he said he is promoting secular values and a different philosophy of humanities as preached by Mahatma Gandhi when travelling to different countries, rather than propagating Buddhism.

2009 also marks 50 years of His Holiness living in exile in India.

"When I visited different countries in these years, I have not promoted or propagated Buddhism as said by many, but harmony, humanity and spirituality. I am promoting secular values, messages of love, compassion, dignity, spirit of common values and harmony as has been promoted by great thinkers" His Holiness said.

Looking back at his 50 years in India, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said, "my life has not been a waste and I got chances to learn from religious leaders, scientists, politicians, businessman and ordinary people whom I had met in all these years. From meeting these people, I have developed a certain vision for life."

His Holiness also said he is sure he will celebrate his 100th birthday. "Through all your wishes, I will live longer. I do not know whether I can live for thousands of years, but I am sure I will stay alive till I am 100 years old."

Happy 74th Birthday Your Holiness, from everyone here in Australia.

Melbourne Public Talk
World Peace, Who is Responsible?

The Melbourne Public Talk is being held on a most auspicious day for His Holiness. The 10th December 2009 is the 20th anniversary of His Holiness receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. It is also International Human Rights day.

Just before his birthday, His Holiness also gave an exclusive interview to Joerg Eigendorf, from Germany, titled 'I am a Supporter of Globalization'.

JE: Religion, states and economy have grown increasingly apart. Do you really believe that religious leaders such as yourself and the pope can change the world for the better?

HHDL: "I do not travel the world as a religious leader. I am a simple person, a simple monk. Sure I have more opportunities because I am welcomed as the Dalai Lama and because I have gathered a lot of experience in my 50 years of living in exile. These are experiences I can share with people. But the moral principles we are talking about, give me an inner strength and inner strength gives me inner peace. This is how I hope to reach out to people."

DLIA Team Update

Tashi Delek, I am Tulku and I work in the office of Dalai Lama in Australia. I have the most fortunate opportunity of being able to introduce you to the team who are busy working on His Holiness' visit to Australia in December.

First off, you all know my Mum, Lynn. She's in charge here. Well, she thinks she is but really I am the one who calls the shots.

Lada is our Receptionist. She is always on the phone. Mum says that's because it's her job. I like Lada because she gives me little bits of bacon that she doesn't eat - yummy. And I really like Karma, who helps Mum with the marketing and liaises with the Australian Tibetan community - he comes to the park with me each afternoon.

Our Office/Admin Coordinator, Fiona, makes sure that you all receive your fabulous communications from us. She's knows everything there is to know about computers and has taught me heaps. Petrina, who Mum says will make sure you get to see and hear His Holiness at the Teachings & Public Talks, is our Event Coordinator, and Sophie will look after all the fabulous volunteers who assist during His Holiness' visit.

Popping in every now and then is Janet, who has the task of balancing the books. Karen, our designer, and Philippa, who again is always on the phone or talking to someone teeing up interviews and other publicity - I wonder if she will want to do a story on me!

There're also the Board members, who live all around Australia, and then of course there is me, Tulku. My name is Tibetan and means teacher.

It's hard being in charge, greeting all the visitors to the office, making myself available for a bit of stress therapy, as well as being the official floor cleaner, but I love helping His Holiness and have made a promise to him and to you all, to make sure I keep everyone in the team on track, ensuring His Holiness' visit is a wonderful experience for all concerned.

Anyway, I am going to be bringing you a small column each month in our friends newsletter. Tulku's Tips is where I will keep you up to date with the goings on of the office and offer advice and tips on how best to prepare for HH's visit.

See you next month, Tulku
